10 Most-Effective Natural Stress Relief Tips That Actually Work

Being a corporate professional and working 9-5 without taking any breaks can make people stressed out. Unfortunately, even when symptoms appear in the body, most people are unaware that along with the body, the mind needs peace and rest too. We usually think that just getting good sleep will help us recover from headaches, low energy, overthinking, irritation, etc., but that’s not always the case. Our body often needs additional support, such as herbal remedies and stress-relief tips, to live a peaceful life.

To help you understand how to relieve stress quickly, I’ve curated this guidebook with the help of my uncle, who is an Ayurvedic doctor. Let’s begin.

How Does Stress and Anxiety Happen?

Before we come straight to the point, let’s first understand how stress and anxiety occurhow it affects the brain and what the signs of chronic stress are. This information can help you detect symptoms early and practice stress management tips at home.

Stress and anxiety happen when our brain remains in flight-or-fight mode for a prolonged period. For example: working tirelessly without giving your mind the rest it needs, getting involved in unnecessary conflicts, having an unhealthy diet, maintaining a poor sleep cycle, experiencing academic or work pressure, lack of socialising, past trauma, financial stress, relationship conflicts and going through recovering from an illness.

In Ayurveda, the mind and the body are deeply interconnected. When we go through physical or mental stress or trauma, every organ in the body is affected, even if we don’t realise it. This lack of awareness about how our body functions often prevents us from understanding the root cause of our issues.

That’s why it is very important to understand that your body needs to stay healthy and active. Below are some signs that indicate you may be under chronic stress.

13 Common Signs of Chronic Stress

- Interrupted sleep cycle.
- Low energy levels.
Overthinking
Digestive Issues
Frequent illness and infections.
Constant Headaches
Long-lasting weakness.
Foggy mind or “brain fog”.
Body aches and pain.
Lack of focus and decision-making ability.
Feeling helpless and irritated.
Muscle Tension
Nervousness and anxiety.

10 Simple and Quick Ways to Relieve Stress

When your body and mind start showing these signs, it’s time to try natural stress-relief tips to restore balance. Chronic stress (which indicates your stress hormone may be imbalanced) directly weakens the immune system and reduces the body’s ability to fight diseases. Follow these exercises and remedies to relieve stress and anxiety.

Inhale and Exhale Technique

Inhale deeply and then exhale slowly. Repeat this daily in the early morning for 8-10 counts.

Breath Box Technique

Inhale slowly while counting to 5, hold your breath for 5 counts and then exhale slowly for 5 counts. Repeat this 8-10 times whenever you feel anxious or fearful.

Yoga Practice

Certain yoga poses can help reduce stress quickly when practiced consistently, especially in the early morning. Some effective poses include:

  • Child’s Pose (Balasana)
  • Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)
  • Corpse Pose (Savasana)

These poses provide deep relaxation to the mind, helping you feel calm and peaceful.

Walk, Walk and Walk

Studies prove that walking is another of the best ways to reduce stress. Walking in the surrounding areas, taking in different views, reframes the mind and is also a form of exercise, healthy for both weight management and the heart. Similarly, taking a short break from long hours of work or meetings and walking in office spaces or a park is also an ideal way to support your mental and physical well-being.

Work-Life Balance

This is a commonly discussed yet mostly overseen essential practice. Maintaining a balance between professional and personal life is crucial. Set boundaries, avoid burnout from excessive work pressure and make time for family, friends and yourself. A healthy mind leads to overall well-being.

Eat Healthy

Eating healthy means consuming freshly prepared, warm meals. Also, include fruits and nuts in your diet, and ensure you get essential nutrients such as vitamins, iron, magnesium, proteins, carbohydrates and minerals. Avoid processed and junk foods, as they may taste good but offer zero nutritional value.

Clear Your Mind

Another way to relieve stress is clearing your mind, which doesn’t mean eliminating all thoughts. It means decluttering negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. Staying calm and balanced helps prevent overthinking, which otherwise keeps the brain in a constant flight-or-fight state, leading to stress, fatigue and headaches.

Decluttering negative thoughts can be done through brain-dump practice. This practice involves writing all your worries and thoughts on a piece of paper. This helps you understand your thoughts and situation better, providing a clearer picture of what you’re dealing with.

(Bonus) Natural Remedies to Relieve Stress

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a powerful Ayurvedic herb known for its adaptogenic properties and made using its roots. It helps reduce stress, general weakness and inflammation, improves immunity, and promotes a calm and relaxed mind. It is commonly available in powder, capsule or tablet form.

Brahmi

Brahmi is another well-known stress-relieving herb in Ayurveda. It helps calm the mind by reducing cortisol levels and improves mental clarity and focus. Brahmi can be found in Ayurvedic formulations and can also be consumed by preparing its herbal tea.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is a popular herbal infusion and favourite of minemade from dried chamomile flowers. To prepare this herbal tea, you need to steep a few dried flowers in hot water for 2-3 minutes and drink it warm. Its natural sedative properties help reduce nervous tension, restlessness and anxiety, promoting better sleep. It is best consumed at night before bedtime.

In context, these were the simple and most effective stress management tips that will help you feel mentally relaxed when you maintain consistency. If you or someone you know is going through unbearable stress or anxiety and the above self-help tips are not effective in reducing them, it is best to consult a doctor for professional help.

Prioritise Peace!

Living a peaceful life with a calm mind and a healthy body has become a dream for many, but only a few achieve it. By following the stress-relief tips and remedies mentioned above, you can move toward a more relaxed and balanced life.

Stress may seem normal and temporary, but when it doesn’t simply disappear on its own, remember that prolonged high stress levels can affect all body organs, leading to serious mental and physical health issues and need to be addressed, even if means you need to visit a doctor for the same.

So, take it seriously and manage your stress before it’s too late.
